Valencia Versus FC Barcelona – Copa Del Rey Semifinal

Friday, February 17th, 2012

After eliminating Real Madrid from the Copa del Rey last week, FC Barcelona’s next big challenge was Valencia in the semi final. Valencia are one of the most outstanding clubs in Spanish football and always a force to be reckoned with. Nonetheless Barcelona at the moment is looking a little tired and ragged, and last night Pep Guardiola had to get by without some key players due to injury, such as Andres Iniesta.

In the first half of the match the 2 groups looked pretty even, but Valencia seemed to create some better possibilities than Barcelona. Cesc Fabregas set up a shot for Alexis, but sadly he was not able to do anything with it. Immediately afterwards Jonas scored the 1st goal of the match to put the hosts in the lead.

Nonetheless Barcelona replied to this instantly and ten minutes later Alexis shot at the goal, which was deflected to give Barcelona a corner. Once more, Puyol used his head and put the ball beyond the keeper and into the back of the net to equalise for the Catalans.

When play continued after the break Alexis appeared to have scored only to have the goal refused for offside. Then ten minutes into the second half, Barcelona got given a penalty, looking like a superb opportunity for Barcelona to assume the lead. Nevertheless the penalty did not go as planned and a slightly hesitant kick from Messi was easily intercepted by the Valencia goalkeeper and pushed aside.

Though Barcelona was now dominating possession they couldn't to do anything with the ball notwithstanding creating one or two new probabilities; they just were not in a position to score and the match stopped 1-1 going into the return leg at the Nou Camp the week after next. At least Barcelona have the edge. We should hope that they have recovered some of the energy, and can put on a more inspiring display.

Malaga Versus FC Barcelona

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

FC Barcelona made the trip down to Malaga for Sun. evening’s match in the Spanish league. Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola was resting some key players before the Copa del Rey clash with Real Madrid on Wednesday, including Carles Puyol, Xavi and Cesc Fabregas; in their place were some of Barcelona’s youngsters instead.

The match started with both teams having some occasions to score. Early on Malaga threatened the Barcelona goal but Valdes got his hands to the ball and pushed it over the crossbar. After the corner that followed Valdes blocked a shot at the goal and then stopped the follow-up off the rebound.

However Barcelona shortly started to dominate possession as always and around the half-hour mark Iniesta and Adriano set up a goal for Leo Messi to make the score one zero to the Catalans. It wasn't till the second half that Barcelona was able to open up that gap, when they came on full of energy, something that often seems to occur.

Alexis scored just two minutes after play had continued and three minutes later Messi followed up with his second goal too. The scoreline effectively meant the game was over from Malaga – nonetheless it was not over for Messi. He kept on working away, with his efforts ultimately rewarded around the 80 minute mark, when he scored his 3rd goal of the match. A few minutes later Malaga were able to claw back one target of their own, although it was much too late to get into the game and salvage any points.

On Wednesday Real Madrid visits the Nou Camp in the second leg of the Copa del Rey quarter-final. Since last week’s match Jose Mourinho has come in for a lot of flak from fans and press alike. He is also reportedly had a b ust up with some of the players meaning that morale might be low. we shall see what occurs on Wednesday.

FC Barcelona Versus Real Sociedad

Saturday, February 11th, 2012

On Sat. night it was the turn of Real Sociedad, based in San Sebastien in the Basque country, to go to the Nou Camp to face FC Barcelona in the Spanish league. The match coincided with a prevalent freeze over much of Spain and saw snow falling in Barcelona and somewhere else. Temperatures plunged to the lowest they've been in at least 1/4 of a century and main roads in some coastal areas were closed due to the snow.

The cold meant that there had been a reasonably low turnout with just 50,000 spectators attending the match. And the team was comprised of several Barcelona B players as coach Pep Guardiola wanted to rest some of the larger names before the match against Valencia on Wednesday in the Copa del Rey; the squad has looked a little knackered lately, which is attributed to partaking of the Club World Cup in December.

Early on the visitors tested Victor Valadez with two a close shots but Barcelona controlled possession and were often inside the visitors area and after just 8 minutes Messi took the ball forward and passed it to one of the B team players, Cristian Tello. Tello put the ball into the back of the Real Sociedad net to take the Catalans one 0 up.

Barcelona continued to dominate possession and they had some good possibilities in the rest of the first half, which eventually came to nothing. After the break the visitors came on out looking like they needed to score. Nevertheless thanks to a great save by Victor Valdes the visitors remained scoreless.

Tello had a second goal disallowed, which deflected off Alves who was offsite, but then in the 71st minute Alves found Messi inside the Real Sociedad area and he kicked the ball home to make the score 2 – 0. Only 2 minutes later though the visitors managed to pull one back and take the scoreline to 2 – 1.

Meanwhile Busquets got a evil looking knee injury when he collided with another player and sustaining a deep gash. However , it appears the injury may not be as heavy as first thought and he may be match fit for Wednesday, when Barcelona play Valencia in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final.

Real Sociedad started the weekend in 12th place in the table but after their loss by the hands of Barcelona they're now in 14th position on the table.

Barcelona Beats Real Madrid In The First Leg Of The King’s Cup Quarter Finals

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

Yesterday evening saw another Classico and this time at the Bernabeu when Barcelona travelled to Madrid to face them in the Copa del Rey quarter final. For Pep Guardiola the result was a brilliant 41st birthday present; impressively Guardiola has still not lost at the Bernabeu and out of the matches that Barcelona has played against Madrid since he took control of as coach, they have won nine matches, drawn three times and lost just once. If you look at the matches at the Bernabeu the stats are far more impressive with 5 wins, two draws and and no losses at all.

It did not look so promising this time round though as after 10 minutes Cristiano Ronaldo put Madrid in the lead, after some scrappy play from both the Barcelona defense and keeper Pinto. Nevertheless Madrid seemed incapable of capitalising on that advantage through lots of the remainder of the first half, while Barcelona tried to claw back a goal. The first half ended one nil to Real Madrid.

However , after the break Barcelona came onlooking refreshed and whatever Guardiola had claimed to them during the break paid off: just 3 minutes into the second half they scored from a corner. In move they had concluded in the break, Xavi kicked the ball into the area, which was headed by Puyol into the back of the net, his 2nd goal against Real Madrid.

After that Barcelona had several opportunities which came to nothing except Madrid up also came near to scoring again. However Madrid’s players appeared were fazed by this stage of the game and starting to play mucky in order to frighten the Catalans. However in the 76th minute Messi passed the ball in the area to Abidal, who shot from close range to put Barcelona in the lead.

Barcelona kept this advantage to the end and ended the match winning 2-1. The next leg is played next Wednesday with Barcelona firm faves to make it through to the semifinal of the Copa del Rey.

Barcelona Knocks Osasuna Out Of King’s Cup

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

The Copa del Rey, which translates as the King’s Cup, although it is usually called the Spanish Cup, has been going since before the creating of the Spanish league and while it's not seen as prestigious an award among major teams, there are frequently some shocks caused by teams from the lower leagues.

FC Barcelona has just qualified for the quarterfinals after thrashing Osasuna. In the home leg they won 4-0 meaning virtually certain elimination for Osasuna, and in the away leg they beat them 2-1 notwithstanding Osasuna going a goal up in the 1st half. That's a thrilling prospect for fans of Spanish soccer as it suggests that Barcelona will face Real Madrid in the following round, two more “clasicos” to happen in January.

With the Barcelona players looking like they were taking it easy after the near certainty of their quarterfinal qualification it appeared like no much would be happening in the match, which took place in freezing, foggy conditions and they were all looking forward to finishing the match and some heat.

Quarter of an hour in Fontas received a unpleasant looking injury and was stretchered off and Pep Guardiola brought on Abidal in his place. Osasuna failed to truly look like they were going to do much either but at the end of the first half they began to threaten. The result was Osasuna going a goal up at the end of the first half, scored by Lekic.

When play resumed after the break the Catalans seemed to be working in a higher gear and the increased energy quickly paid off when Alexis scored from an Adriano cross to equalise.

Soon after Guardiola took Alexis off and replaced him with Lionel Messi, who charged about the pitch in his usual fashion; and Pedro went off in favor of Busquets after seeming to suffer with a thigh strain. Then Messi set up Barcelona’s winning goal in the 72nd minute from within the area allowing Sergi Roberto to put the ball past the Osasuna keeper for the final objective of the match.
