Espanyol V Barcelona Match Report

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

FC Barcelona crossed the town on Sun. 8th Janury 2012 to play Espanyol at their stadium at Cornella-El Prat in the twice-annual local Derby in la liga. With Real Madrid having beaten Granada 5-1 on Saturday, all eyes were on the Barcelona after ending just 3 points behind their arch-rivals at the end of 2011.

Espanyol came close to scoring the 1st goal in the 1st 10 minutes, only stopped by a great save from Victor Valdes; then the visitors went one goal ahead after quarter of an hour due to a goal from Cesc Fabregas. Dani Alves charged forward with the ball, crossed the ball to Cesc who reached with his head and put it beyond the fingers of Espanyol’s keeper, Alvarez.

But regardless of the early lead, Barcelona was unable to capitalise upon it. The half time break arrived with the match one goal in Barcelona’s favor and when the groups came on thereafter they seemed evenly matched.

It was not until late in the match that Espanyol’s time came after Rodriguez crossed to Thievy who headed the ball forward to Vazquez, who put the ball into the back of Barcelona’s net to equalize.

Barcelona can be good at making last minute comebacks though and in injury time it seemed like precisely that was going to occur. Nonetheless a clear handball from Rodriguez went unpunished by the referee and Barcelona’s chance for a winning penalty evaporated.

After the match Barcelona’s coach Pep Guardiola was asked whether the league was to all intents and purposes over for FC Barcelona this season. He shrugged off the concept, replying that we are nearly half way thru the season and that anything can occur.

It was good to see Andres Iniesta back after a slight injury picked up before the Christmas break, although David Villa is recuperating after breaking his leg in Japan and should be out of action for the foreseeable future.

FC Barcelona Overcomes Osasuna

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

FC Barcelona came a step closer to the Copa del Rey semifinals last night after a 4-0 win against Osasuna in the Nou Camp. Trouble Cesc Fabregas and Lionel Messi scored two goals each, the latter having been anticipated to miss the match due to influenza and sitting almost all of the match out.

Barcelona quickly got into their stride, unlike Ream Madrid the evening before who had gone 2 goals down in the 1st half, prompting coach Jose Mourinho to tell the press that he would have modified all 11 players at half time if he’d been able. While Real Madrid got back into the game to win 3-2 against Malaga, Osasuna never really got into the match at all, with barely 20 percent possession.

The 1st goal came from Cesc, set up by Alves and Xavi and once again new boy Cuenca showed that he's got some real potential for the future. Xavi set up Cesc’s 2nd goal inside 20 minutes after a period of about relentless attack. Osasuna must have felt they had no chance. It looked as they Barcelona should improve their score across the first half, but the break came with a 2-0 scoreline in Barcelona’s favor.

The second half started with Barcelona on the attack and were unfortunate not to have once been awarded a penalty. On three occasions it looked like Bara should be awarded a penalty but the referee thought otherwise. But Lionel Messi, who had asked Pep Guardiola to allow him play after responding well to treatment for his flu, came on and the remainder of the match was his.

His first goal came in the 74th minute when he headed the ball into the net after Osasuna did not clear it from their area; Messi was euphoric, as were his fellow players. And in injury time there was time for a last goal as Xavi found Messi on the side of the box – another goal for the Argentine.

The result of the FC Barcelona v Osasuna match means that Osasuna has basically given up on the Copa del Rey, the coach saying that they will focus on their league matches.

For supporters of FC Barcelona the news of the summer was that Cesc Fabregas was finally joining the club, after a year or more engaged in a phoney war with Arsenal in which time he was expected to move but stayed forcibly put.

“Cesc” – short for Francesc – Fabregas started his football career at Mataro as a younster and it is reported that his coach was so afraid of Barça signing him that he was not played against Barcelona. In the end they did see him and signed him into Barcelona’s youth academy at the age of ten and played alongside Gerard Pique and Lionel Messi.

Nonetheless because of limited opportunities at FC Barcelona he left and instead joined Arsenal’s youth academy aged 16 and made his debut for the London club in 2003. It wasn't till the 2004/05 season that he changed into a first team regular and played in league matches though.

Making a name for himself, he played against FC Barcelona in the 2006 Champions League final, while Real Madrid tried to release him from his Arsenal contract. Renewing a long term contract with the Gunners, Cesc played in all the league matches and continued to build his name for creative play and in June 2007 gained 60 p.c of the votes to be named Arsenal’s Player of the year; he also won the award a year later .

In 2008 Cesc was made Arsenal’s captain; nonetheless Cesc was sidelined for 4 months with a knee injury sustained against Liverpool. He also suffered a leg fracture in 2010 against FC Barcelona while playing in the Champions League quarterfinal.

At the end of the 2010 season after playing alongside several Barça vets in the Spanish squad that won the World cup there was intense conjecture regarding his future and in the parties that followed Spain’s win his colleagues pulled at Barça shirt over his head; Nonetheless a 35 million bid was rejected by Arsenal.

A year later the 2 groups once more entered into protracted negotiations. Ultimately Cesc was allowed to walk away from the London club and into the arms of his boyhood team – FC Barcelona.
